To work as a security officer in Western Australia, you need a security licence issued by the WA Police Force. The process is straightforward once you know the steps. This guide walks you through them.
Step 1: Complete CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations
The CPP20218 Certificate II in Security Operations is the qualification required for a security officer licence. It covers communication, conflict management, patrolling, access control, legal responsibilities and responding to incidents.
At SNS College, the course is delivered as blended learning: required online learning plus 10 days of supervised face-to-face training and practical assessment at our Perth CBD campus.
Step 2: Hold a Current First Aid Certificate
WA Police requires a current first aid certificate as part of your licence application. SNS College includes HLTAID011 Provide First Aid in the Certificate II program, so you are covered.
Step 3: Pass the Security Competency Test
Applicants must also pass a written examination based on the training course content. In WA, this test is booked and paid for through Security Competency Test WA. Your trainer can explain how and when to book it.
Step 4: Apply to WA Police Licensing
Once you have your qualification, current first aid and test result, you apply to the WA Police Force Licensing Enforcement Division using the security licence application form. Check the WA Police website for the current form, fees, identification and any other requirements, such as fingerprinting and probity checks, before you apply.
Already Have CPP20212?
If you completed the older CPP20212 Certificate II in Security Operations, you may not need to start again. SNS College offers a CPP20218 Security Officer Upgrade Pathway with targeted online learning and one supervised practical day. Your credit transfer is confirmed after we review your evidence.
Tips for a Smooth Application
- Make sure your name matches across your ID, certificate and application
- Keep digital copies of all documents
- Check your first aid is current on the day you apply
- Read the WA Police requirements carefully, as rules can change
- Allow time for processing before you start job hunting
